[GRASSLIST:3207] drainage directions with r.watershed

Hello all,
the r.watershed algorithm (at least in Grass4, I have not tried Grass5) 
appears to overwhelmingly favor diagonal (odd) directions, at least for 
DEMs with relatively small relief.
Is this a well known feature, are there ways around this problem (like some 
more recent version with improved algorithm ...?) . Any help or hint or 
reference would be welcome !
