It appears that AF_UNIX sockets are supported, based on the man pages.  
It's a vanilla MACOS X installation on a HFS+ filesystem, so all the 
'standard' stuff should be there.

My mapsets are currently in my own user hierarchy, so I have write 
access to everything.
