This suggests that you aren't using the pre3 version of the monitor. 
The error message has changed to:

	Usage: /path/to/XDRIVER <name> [-] "input_fifo output_fifo" [<nlev>]

Ensure that any previous version of GRASS is removed (or moved out of
the way) before installing pre3.
