[GRASSLIST:4162] editing labels

Hi all

How do I edit existing labels on vectors?  I would actually like to
delete the existing labels and put new ones on the lines.  Is there any
way of doing this (v.(a/l)label don't help with this as far as I can
see).  Also, I get the following error when running v.label

bash: v.label: command not found

I am using grass5.0.0pre4 on mandrake 8.2
