Now it is working, when I ran tracepath yesterday the system seemed to get caught in some
weird loop at an Italian internet provider. Some sort of endless loop between two machines there.

I found I could access via an internet proxy though. My guess is the provider in question 
had their routing messed up.

I wonder if other people have had their access problems resolved too.
