GRASS doesn't look for it; the loader (e.g. ld-linux.so.2) looks for
it, according to the contents of /etc/ld.so.cache (generated by
ldconfig by scanning the directories in /etc/ld.so.conf plus /lib and
/usr/lib) and the value of the environment variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
