[GRASSLIST:9799] Help w/ Landsat TM image processing in GRASS

Well, I got some TM scenes from GLCF, imported with r.in.gdal, r.null

r.colors map=band color=grey.eq was a bit too extreme, and I am
struggling with r.mapcalc to enhance the bands.
d.histogram was very helpfull in finding what is the usable part of
the band, but I am still unable to do what I want.

As per http://www.udel.edu/johnmack/frec682/682proj5.html, I am trying
to retain the central 96% of the usable band, say from 70 to 130 in
one band and dump the rest.

After doing this for bands 1,2,3, (maybe others too) I'll r.composite
them. I want a realistic looking image.
With realistic, i mean as if I were on the ground.

Not sure if I made myself clear,
