Hello Maris
Thanks a Lot for writing back to my query. As u
suggested there was a conflict betn the hdf4 and the
seperate netcdf installed on my system.
I went through the URL u gave.
On configuring gdal-1.3.1 without the hdf4 support
everything seems to be working fine
