What versions? Using current Grass and Qgis CVS, Gdal 2006-02-10 and
gdal-grass 1.3.1.1 it works for me.

At first I thought maybe the missing projection was the case but QGIS
reads my xy Grass rasters fine.

Are you sure your Gdal instalation is new enough?
