Hm, weird I tried to re-create Luca's problem and couldn't. I made two lines
similar to Luca's below and managed to snap the vertices at a number of
distances, even when the unbroken parallel line was closer than the two
vertices. (?)

Do both lines belong to the same vector/layer?
