[GRASS-user] Failure to display raster maps (no problems with vectors)

Hello

This is a rather peculiar fault, which I assume is linked to X-display
settings or something similar. Here, students wanting to use GRASS use
an NX-client on a Windows PC to connect to a centrally-managed server,
and run GRASS 6.2.2RC1 on a Redhat EL machine. One of them has reported
problems displaying raster maps in the d.mon screen, which remains
blank. The region is correctly set, there is no MASK. If a screen
snapshot is taken, then the raster map is visible in the snapshot,
though not visible on screen. Vector maps display without problems, and
using gis.m, rasters can be displayed properly. Note that r.stats,
d.what.rast etc. work normally, even if nothing is displayed in the
d.mon window.

I had originally assumed this was a problem with the NX client, because
if one uses ssh -X to connect to the remote RHEL server everything
behaves normally. However, on discussing the issue with colleagues, one
reported the identical issue on his local workstation installation of
GRASS (version 6.2.2cvs running on Ubuntu 7.04) early last week. When I
asked how he had solved it he stated that he went back to using GRASS
version 5. On trying to repeat the error on his PC now, however, GRASS
v. 6 appeared to be working without problems.

Has anyone else hit this issue, or can they give any suggestions as to
what might be wrong?

Many thanks
Roy
