FIRST ANNOUNCE / CALL FOR ABSTRACTS<br><br>

You are invited to participate in the SECOND INTERNATIONAL SWAT
CONFERENCE, <br>
which will be hosted by the WATER RESEARCH INSTITUTE (IRSA) of the
Italian <br>
NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (CNR) in the city of Bari, Italy, from 01 to 04
July <br>
2003 <br><br>
The Symposium is being co-ordinated together with the SWAT Team from the
USDA -<br>
ARS Research Lab, Temple Texas, the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station
in <br>
Temple Texas, and in collaboration with the EU R&D Projects EUROHARP
(“Towards <br>
European Harmonised Procedures for Quantification of Nutrient Losses from
<br>
Diffuse Sources”; EVK-CT-2001-00096) and TEMPQSIM (“Evaluation and
Improvement <br>
of Water Quality Models for Application to Temporary Waters in Southern
European <br>
Catchments”; EVK1-CT-2002-00112). <br><br>
The SWAT INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES are held every two years: the
first was held <br>
in Giessen (Germany) in 2001. <br><br>
The purpose of the meeting is to gather together researchers devoted to
river <br>
basin modelling since it is recognized that water supply and quality are
issues <br>
of increasing importance and the need to study the cumulative impact of
human <br>
activities and land management at the watershed level is critical to the
success <br>
of water management strategies. <br><br>
The Organizing Committee aims to bring together SWAT model users and
developers <br>
as well as scientists interested in hydrologic modelling of water
resources at <br>
basin scale. Sessions are planned for attendees to present papers as well
as <br>
open forums to discuss modelling issues with the development team from
Texas. <br>
During the Conference the new version of the model and of the GUI / GIS
<br>
interface (SWAT 2003) will be presented and released. <br><br>
The first session of the Conference will be a roundtable in which some
national <br>
approaches on basin simulation aimed to watershed management and planning
will <br>
be presented and discussed. Some of the invited speakers for that
session will <br>
come from USDA, U.S. Universities, U.S. EPA, the European
Commission, some EU <br>
Research Centres, the Euraqua Consortium and the Italian Ministry for
<br>
Environment.<br><br>

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME<br><br>
Registration will take place in the afternoon of Tuesday 01 <br>
July, followed by three days of scientific sessions from Wednesday 02
July to <br>
Friday 04 July. The format will consist of plenary sessions for
offered papers <br>
and posters. <br>
Parallel sessions will be run if required. <br>
The official language of the Conference is English.

CALL FOR PAPERS AND POSTERS<br><br>
<br>
You are invited to submit an abstract for an oral paper or a poster.
<br><br>
Oral papers are scheduled to last 20 minutes, including 15 minutes
of <br>
presentation and 5 minutes for questions. Facilities will be available
for 35mm <br>
slides, overhead projection and Powerpoint (laptop PC, with floppy
disc-drive <br>
and CD-ROM). Presenters using Powerpoint will be required to use the
laptop <br>
provided, rather than their own laptop, so should bring their
presentation on <br>
disk (floppy or CD). Software will be available to unzip zipped files as
well as <br>
an Iomega Zip drive for ZIP disks. <br><br>
Posters should be A0 in size (841 mm x 1149 mm). They should be mounted
by 17.30 <br>
on Tuesday 01 July and should remain on display throughout the
Conference. <br>
Authors are encouraged to be present by their poster, to answer
questions, <br>
during the planned coffee breaks. <br><br>

SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS<br><br>
<br>
All participants proposing to give an oral or poster presentation must
submit an <br>
abstract. Please send a hard (paper) copy of your abstract, together with
your <br>
Registration Form and payment, to the Conference Secretary (SEE BOTTOM).
<br>
An electronic copy of your abstract, in MS Word format, should also be
<br>
emailed as an attachment to SWAT2003@area.ba.cnr.it. <br>
If you cannot email a copy in MS Word, please <br>
incorporate your abstract in the body of the email itself (as well as
sending <br>
the hard copy). <br><br>
Guidelines for the format of your abstract are provided on the Conference
Web site <br>

<br><br>
Please follow the guidance carefully, as abstracts not conforming to the
<br>
specified format may be rejected. <br><br>
Only one presentation (one oral paper or one poster) per person will be
allowed, <br>
although a person may be a co-author on other papers/posters also. Before
<br>
submitting an abstract, authors should be confident that they can attend
the <br>
meeting. <br><br>
If you need to cancel your registration at any time, please inform the
<br>
secretariat immediately. <br><br>
The deadline for receipt of abstracts is March 8, 2003. You will be
notified of <br>
the result of your submission by March 21, 2003 (email) or a few days
later if <br>
you do not have email. The authors of accepted abstracts are
requested to send <br>
an extended version of the abstract ( up to 4 pages) by June 13, 2003.
<br>
Guidelines for the extended abstract will be provided to the authors of
the <br>
accepted abstracts. <br><br>
Depending on the number of abstracts submitted, you may be invited to
give your <br>
oral paper as a poster, or your poster as an oral paper. Extended
Abstracts will <br>
be printed in a Book of Abstracts, made available to delegates on arrival
at the <br>
Symposium. <br><br>
The Organizing Committee is trying to arrange with the journal
Hydrological <br>
Processes to publish on a Special Issue selected papers from the
Conference. <br><br>
Anyway authors are free to present recent work without limiting their
<br>
opportunities to publish elsewhere. <br><br>

VENUE AND ACCOMMODATION<br><br>
<br>
Bari is one of the greatest towns of South Italy (around <br>
350.000 inhabitants) and it is the Capital town of the Apulia Region.
<br>
Bari is located on the Adriatic Sea. It has a large shopping area, a very
lovely <br>
seaside walk and a medieval Old Town with important churches and pleasant
<br>
nightlife. Excellent beaches are easily reachable in the surroundings of
the <br>
town. <br><br>
The Conference will be held at the Excelsior Congress Hall, in Bari
downtown, a <br>
couple of minutes walk from the Railway station and from the terminal of
the <br>
Airport Bus connection. <br><br>
Coffee breaks and lunches will be held in the same Congress Hall.
Accommodation <br>
will be available in different hotels in Bari downtown. Room reservations
can be <br>
made through the Conference Secretariat (see bottom). In this case the
deadline for room <br>
reservation is April 30. <br><br>
Anyway, Bari offers a wide range of accommodations for people willing to
book by <br>
themselves. <br><br>
The city is served by a national Airport well connected to Rome and Milan
<br>
international airports and by inter-city train station (with direct links
to all <br>
the other major towns in Italy.), as well as coach services and motorways
from <br>
elsewhere in the country. The airport is at around 6 km from the city and
has a <br>
dedicated taxi service as well as a regular express bus service into the
centre <br>
of Bari which operates in correspondence of all flights, seven days a
week. <br><br>
