Idea: r.mapcalc doesn't copy the color map along with the data.
Does the range of data etc shown with r.info look consistent?
How about r.univar?
Try this to copy the color map from the original to the new after
r.mapcalc:
r.colors cropped_map rast=map

I have to apologize a tousand times for bothering hte list:<br>

I used a number as name for my map<br>
[there is a number in the maps that corresponds with the ID and to
shorten the name alittle bit I just used the ID].<br>
So my r.mapcalc command gave each pixel of the new cropped map the
value of that number.<br>
I did recognize this by using r.info.<br>
