I tried compressing it and moving the compressed file to the server, that worked. </blockquote><div><br></div><div>Great.</div><div> </div><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0 0 0 .8ex;border-left:1px #ccc solid;padding-left:1ex;">
I'd never heard of rsync before - that sounds like an elegant solution, I'll try that one.</blockquote><div><br></div><div>Absolutely - especially, if you copy the data regularly. But even for a single copy of a larger amount of data, rsync is quite useful. </div>

Hidden files should be copied - I did a drag and drop operation with the file manager and that should copy hidden files contained in the copied folders (at least that's the way it works when I test it out on my desktop, but since the command behind the copying is probably cp it should work the same when I copy it to a server). Server HDD still has lots of room, more than a TB. File system is on the desktop is Ext4, I can't find any documentation on the NAS server but it's a Black Armor from Seagate and I assume it's NTFS internally. I use CIFS to talk to it. It's definitely got files on it that are > 4 GB.<br>
<br>Archiving on the desktop and moving the archive to the server is a good idea, I'll try it out and report back :)</blockquote><div><br></div></div></div><div>Or you could try rsync - usually the best for these kind of things. </div>
