    GRASS Users Mailing List

    Introduction and Instructions

This list was created in order to help people answer questions related to the GRASS Geographic Information System.

The list is officially unmoderated, but remember that any misuse of the list (e.g. flame wars, spamming, reposting for commercial gain, etc.,) will result in your removal from the list. While we do believe in free speech, we WILL intervene if things get out of hand. We trust everyone to use their best judgement.

To subscribe, send mail to -
    listproc@baylor.edu

with the words subscribe GRASSLIST your name
in the BODY of the message. You will receive a confirmation and variation of this message. Also it is a good idea to make a place to store these messages in your mail program as your email traffic will increase.

To unsubscribe from grasslist send a message to -
    listproc@baylor.edu

    and type the words -
    unsubscribe GRASSLIST

in the BODY of the message.

Digest mode (bundle messages): It is possible to receive messages from the mailing list bundled into digests. To turn on that option send a message FROM the address you used to subscribe to the list TO listproc@baylor.edu
and in the BODY of that message, put the following command:
    "SET grasslist@baylor.edu MAIL DIGEST"
To REVERSE this option (i.e. to go back to getting individual messages, follow the above instructions but send the command:
    "SET grasslist@baylor.edu MAIL"
    to listproc@baylor.edu

IMPORTANT: (e.g. these are the rules!)

    1. Please do not post large (eg 100 kb) files to the list.

    2. All subscribers are encouraged to participate in discussion, but please no commercial postings. We won't go into the fun problems this causes for us; just don't do it. Ignoring this warning will cause plague, famine, and worst of all, your permanent removal from the list.

    3. If your system imposes a disk quota on your account, please pay attention to your usage. If you fill your quota, all mail bounces back to us and our mailbox quickly fills with messages about "undeliverable mail." If you let it slip, we will give you about 24 hours. After that, your name will be removed from the list.

    4. Please set your mail program to send messages in plain text. Sending mail in HTML or any other non-standard format not only annoys other list subscribers (and your not-so-humble list managers,) but effectively doubles the bandwidth usage. Keep in mind that most users who can't easily read non-standard mail simply delete your email without reading it.

    5. As a general service to list users, please remember to post a SUMMARY of any useful responses to your questions. And finally:

      [ HOME ]

The Geographic Resources Analysis Support System, commonly referred to as GRASS GIS, is a Geographical Information System (GIS) used for data management, image processing, graphics production, spatial modeling, and visualization of raster, vector and sites data. It is open source Free Software released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). The new features of GRASS 6 cover a new topological 2D/3D vector engine and support for vector network analysis. Attributes are now managed in an SQL-based DBMS. A new display manager has been implemented. The NVIZ visualization tool was enhanced to display 3D vector data and voxel volumes. Messages are partially translated (i18N) with support for FreeType fonts, including multibyte Asian characters. New LOCATIONs can be auto-generated by EPSG code number. GRASS is integrated with GDAL/OGR libraries to support an extensive range of raster and vector formats, including OGC-conformal Simple Features.

      Platforms supported by GRASS:

GNU/Linux, Sun Solaris (SPARC/Intel), Silicon Graphics Irix, Mac OS X/Darwin, Microsoft Windows with Cygwin, HP-UX, DEC-Alpha, AIX, BSD, iPAQ/Linux and other UNIX compliant platforms (32/64bit).

      Software download/CDROM:

The new source code is available now, and selected binary distributions for major operating systems will be published shortly.

For details on GRASS software capabilities please refer to: http://grass.itc.it/intro/general.php and the previous GRASS 6.0.0 Announcement.
