[winGRASS] Re: problem starting grass

I am using a new install of Cygwin, I installed everything EXCEPT tcl/tk
libraries. I downloaded the proper ones from the grass5.7 directory, and
installed using provided .sh file.

I ran which -a wish, and came up with one in /usr/local/bin. Date is
3/28/2002, size is 1209kb file is wish8.3.exe

I'll explain a little more background on the problem. At one point I had
everything working properly. I then installed vis5d+ and that worked, but
when I went back to grass, I got the error message i mentioned before.
After trying a few things, I ended up deleteating Cygwin completly, and
reinstalling, including grass (I have tried all versions 5, 5.3, 5.7) and
get the same problem. I have tried doing full reinstalls afew times,
including deleting all cygwin Windows registry entries with no luck.

I don't recall if when I installed vis5d I had to get cygwinb19 from
somwhere to make it work, It was awhile ago. I think I may have though,
because it was requesting it, and I would have put it in c:\cygwin\bin.
That may be what caused the problem, but like I said, I have since deleted
all traces of it.

I am wondering if it may be becuase of my home path? After install, it is
set to a network share, which is my windows home directory. Could this be
causing a problem? How might I fix it? I am fairly new to Unix-like
sytems.

I have just tried copying mysql.exe and the dll to /usr/local/bin but that
didn't help.

When installed cygwin, I got this message the first time I ran it.

Your group is currently \"mkgroup\". This indicates that
the /etc/group (and possibly /etc/passwd) files should be rebuilt.
See the man pages for mkpasswd and mkgroup then, for example, run
  mkpasswd -l [-d] > /etc/passwd
  mkgroup -l [-d] > /etc/group
Note that the -d switch is necessary for domain users.

I'm not sure aht it means though.

I hope that's enough information to work an answer out of!

Thanks,
Martin

Have just installed grass57 and the latest cygwin release from bineary
installs.
Get it started but after displaying the first maps or when opening most

ps.map). I think I had installed cygwin with almost all components.

Hi Juergen,

> ...I get a PG.DLL is missing message ...

I have no pure "pg.dll" in the Cygwin directory.
There are pg_blah-blah.dlls in the /bin/ dir, but
they belong to the PostgreSQL.
And there is a "pq.dll" in the /bin/ (PQ.DLL).
That's all.

Regards,
Csaba

Hello,

whoever is maintaing the Cygwin port of winGRASS, isn't there interest
to include winGRASS as a package with the Cygwin net distribution, so
people could use setup.exe to install wniGRASS including dependencies?

We're also right now discussing at the Cygwin maintainer list about the
inclusion PostGIS as an addon to the POstgreSQL package, however I don't
now if that belongs here.

No, don't update Tcl/Tk, Grass requires a modified version of Tcl/Tk
found at:
   http://grass.itc.it/grass57/binary/mswindows_cygwin
download:
   xtcltk-8.3.4-CYGWIN.tar.gz
You can use Cygwin setup to un-install any existing Cygwin version of
Tcl/Tk, or you can use some other method to hide it. You can issue the
command 'which wish' to see which version Grass is finding, or 'which -a
wish' to see all versions of wish which are installed. (wish is a
component of Tcl/Tk).

I have no idea what's with the "cygwinb19.dll", I don't have one on my
system.

If this TCL/TK depends on a 5 years old version of Cygwin, then good
night, I'm sure that there are more than one ports of recent TCL
packages to recent Cygwin versions out there in the web, so why should
one use a beta version which b19 is (that was the beta before beta20).
We have five years later and Cygwin is at version 1.5, no beta, more
stable IMO.

In the document at the website you quopted is stated:
"Prerequisites:
  - Cygwin, latest release,"

No word about b19, I assume the TCL package is broken, ask the maintainer.

And could you tell me who is this maintainer and what is the difference
with this TCL package?

Is it eventually the MySQL client which is requireing cygwinB19?

You may fetch my MySQL package then which is compiled against recent
Cygwin DLL:
http://anfaenger.de/cygwin/cygwin-1.5/mysql/mysql-4.0.17-pc-cygwin-i686-1.ta
r.bz2

There is the server included in this huge package, just move mysql.exe
and the cygmysqlclient-x.dll to a directory in your PATH (e.g.
/usr/local/bin).
