Looks like we're in the clear to redistribute the oracle jars with our
downloads. Rich, is there a good place for us to gather this kind of
review stuff? Or just throw it in the wiki?

Chris,

This is not a problem at all. The OTN download license associated with
the SDOAPI.JAR allows developers to distribute the code with their
applications.

It can be found under Oracle Spatial Java Class Library on:

http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/spatial/index.html

I believe that classes12.jar is part of our JDBC driver, also associated
with the same type of OTN download license. That can be found at:

http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/index.html

OTN licenses vary; some allow development use only and other allow
development and distribution. These two allow distribution. Just check
the terms of the license and you should be all set.

BTW, these tools look extremely interesting. We're happy to make it
easy for you to support our technologies.

Jim

Subject: Oracle Spatial and Open Source

Hi, I got your names from Marc Risney, one of your employees on Oracle
Spatial, who has been participating in some of the open source projects
I'm involved with.

I work on GeoTools and GeoServer, two well respected open source
projects that provide access to Oracle Spatial. We are also listed as
'Spatial and Location Services Partners' on:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/spatial/spatial_partners_isv.htm

I'm not quite sure how we got there, but Marc indicated that being on
that list might allow our projects to make use of the sdoapi and
classes12 jars.

I'm writing on behalf of the projects, and as a board member of the new
Open Source Geospatial Foundation (http://www.osgeo.org), as GeoTools is
going to be one of the first OSGeo projects. Part of the 'incubation
process', of making GeoTools a 'foundation project' is an ip review and
check.

As part of GeoTools we'd like to redistribute the sdoapi.jar and the
classes12.jar, so that our developers can successfully compile the
geotools code from scratch, as it uses the jars. We've actually been
moving towards not using the sdoapi jar at all, since it was a bit too
locked up for us, but Marc indicated that as a partner we could perhaps
be able to redistribute it.

This will make it much easier for new developers to get started with
Oracle Spatial with GeoTools/GeoServer/uDig, and ensure that bug fixes
on the code in general will be incorporated. When we make developers
download the jars themselves the module gets less maintained. Making
this as easy as possible for developers will ensure that cutting edge
open source applications can be easily written against oracle spatial.

So please let me know if it is ok for us to redistribute those jars, so
that the OSGeo foundation can for sure endorse the GeoTools code as 'in
the clear', so that organizations can feel comfortable building on the
toolkit without worrying about having to do an ip check.

best regards,

Chris
