you are making a good point in asking "what's different now, will it run better this time". Indeed, OSGeo and us earlier disagreed on governance issues. After a 6 years process in the end the showstopper was about my veto rights in the steering committee, ie:
"design by committee" vs "design by competence" as we see it: while we always have been open to discussion and accepting advice from anybody we would not allow majority voting on strategies, irrespective of competence.<br>

Partly based on this dispute (I believe) OSGeo decided to introduce OSGeo Community projects which relax corresponding rules. This way a bridge was built to incorporate further projects with more variety in their governance. Personally, I feel this is a great
move forward towards a more inclusive view, accepting the plurality and thus allowing more open-source projects to be represented by OSGeo. I always felt that basically we are rowing the same boat, sharing similar ideals to a large extent. This is why we will
be happy to join OSGeo under this regime should the vote result in an adoption<br>
