Functions and activities:

• Scientific assistant of the Head of the Unit
• Scientific, technical and academic activities of the Unit
• Education activities of the Unit (courses, master, etc.)
• In charge of important research lines of the unit, as defined in the
“research terms of reference” in Section 4

2 The Institute of Geomatics

The Institute of Geomatics is a non-profit public consortium of the
autonomous Government of Catalonia (GC) and the Technical University of
Catalonia (UPC). It was created by law of the GC in 1997 and its mission
is to promote and develop geomatics, through applied research and
education, for the general benefit of society.

The Institute of Geomatics is organized along modern academic management
principles. It integrates a friendly and motivating research atmosphere
together with scientific, technical and administrative rigor. We
practice the knowledge triangle of research, innovation and education.
We measure our performance. We trust and respect people.

3 The 3D Geo-Visualization and Modelling Unit (3D-GVM)

The 3D-GVM research unit led by Prof. Volker Paelke has been newly
created in 2010 to conduct research in the domains of 3D geospatial data
integration, interpretation and visualization. The central goal of the
unit is to investigate the potential of 3D visualization and interaction
to improve communication, analysis and interaction with geospatial and
spatio-temporal data. To this end the group conducts research in the
visualization and interactive analysis of complex geospatial datasets
and develops and evaluates technologies for advanced user interface like
mixed reality (MR) and augmented reality (AR) and adaptive user
interfaces for location aware mobile applications. Applying a user
centred design perspective these technologies are validate in a wide
range of geospatial applications.

4 Research terms of reference

The position offers the opportunity to actively contribute to the
build-up of the 3D Geo-Visualization and Modelling Unit by initiating
and conducting research in the dynamic and challenging research domain
outlined in the previous section and advising junior researchers and
students. The candidate is expected to have superior research experience
within his field of expertise (related to the integration and analysis
of 3D geospatial data, 3D geovisualization or augmented and mixed
reality for geospatial applications) and a demonstrated interest to
conduct leading-edge research in interdisciplinary collaboration.
The research lines of the candidate should fit within the following
terms of reference:
• Assimilation and interpretation of geodata into 3D models (including
GIS, LIDAR and photogrammetric data)
• Modelling, management and analysis of 3D geospatial and
spatio-temporal data (e.g. 3D city models, environment models, urban
simulation)
• 3D geovisualization, novel 3D visualization techniques, 3D
generalization and multi-scale representation, mixed and augmented
reality visualization
• Interaction techniques for geo-spatial data, e.g. tangible
interaction, multi-touch interaction, mobile interaction

5 Candidate profile

• Academic background and degree:
- PhD in geomatics or related disciplines (e.g. computer science,
engineering or mathematics).
- Experience in conducting and leading research at the academic level,
including the management of R+D projects and the supervision of PhD and
MSc students.
- Experience in the areas of cartography, mapping and GIS.
• Language skills:
The candidate is expected to communicate fluently and flawlessly in
English. Knowledge of Spanish and Catalan is an asset. The candidate is
expected to reach a sufficient “operational” communication level in
Catalan and Spanish within three years.
• Other:
The candidate will be asked to actively participate in the Institute’s
educational activities and is expected to further develop her/his
management and leadership abilities.
