 Project Manager

OpenGeo is seeking a skilled Project Manager to help us bring open source
software to governments, commercial enterprises, NGOs, and other
organizations around the world.

OpenGeo is seeking an outstanding individual with strong leadership and
communications skills, background in open source, web, and/or geospatial
software, and a swiss-army brain to lead new projects at OpenGeo.

OpenGeo serves a wide range of clients with software development and
training around our geospatial web tools. We innovate in open government,
disaster risk management, and other game-changing fields. Our software
allows researchers, planners, and others to share and edit data using open
standards. Our platforms have grown into true, open communities, with a
focus on usability, modularity, and good documentation.

You will lead several of these projects—using the OpenGeo Suite, GeoNode and
other components to build advanced web mapping applications for a wide
variety of clients. When not engaging with clients or our team, you will be
strategizing to make the most out of your projects and build their legacy.

*About Us*

OpenGeo is the geospatial division of OpenPlans, a New York–based 501(c)(3)
not-for-profit that functions as a high tech social incubator. OpenPlans is
a ‘dot-org’: a non-profit connecting open source software with social
change. We aim to make data open, accessible and useful. We’re looking for
someone who wants to use technology to make a difference.

*Responsibilities*

   - Facilitate the definition of project scope, goals and deliverables
   - Write functional specifications and/or user stories understandable to
   all project stakeholders
   - Manage teams of skilled software developers, architects, designers, and
   technical writers to achieve project goals
   - Report and deliver to your happy clients while saying "no" when
   appropriate
   - Streamline processes within your projects and team to be efficient,
   effective, and energized
   - Get your hands dirty when the going gets tough
   - Responsibly juggle budget, staff availability, and client expectations
   in coordination with other leaders at OpenGeo
   - Organize short-term outputs and operations into a long-term strategies
   - Act as a public voice for your projects when appropriate: via blogs,
   wikis, mailing lists, speaking engagements, etc.
   - Present your team's successes to clients and at conferences.
   - Assist in getting common application components into our core open
   source libraries, and in building new communities around your projects

*Qualifications*

*We’re looking for gifted manager and application developers who have*:

   - 3+ years managing software development projects
   - 2+ years of related professional experience: software development,
   quality assurance, customer support, web design, UI/UX design, etc.
   - Excellent communications skills and even better listening skills
   - A passion for open source and a background in geospatial technology

*The ideal candidate offers*:

   - Working knowledge of JavaScript, Java, and Python; especially the Ext
   JS library and Django framework
   - Familiarity with PostGIS, GeoServer, OpenLayers, and GeoExt
   - Familiarity with Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards
   - Open source community involvement at the committer level in at least
   one project
   - Strong record of working closely with clients and understanding their
   needs
   - A good feel for process and systems engineering
   - Experience using social media technologies to promote projects and
   build community
   - Fluency in English. Fluency in French or Spanish is a plus.

You must be organized, self-directed, and passionate about using your skills
to make information ever more free and accessible.
