 I tried '`rm -r ~/udigWorkspace/.metadata`' and it crashed every time,
 until the third time when it not only froze my VM but also the X-Windows
 on my host and I had to reboot! Then I stopped testing. :-)

 sorry, the ~/hs_err_pid4215.log was lost in the reboot. The progress bar
 in the startup splash screen got about half way across, to the middle of
 the word "Desktop"
