 Checking the provided core dump this failure is happening outside of the
 Java VM .. so I am expecting a change of operating environment ...

 uDig has two things that hit native code:

 * Java (looks like OpenJDK is used)
 * SWT (this integrates with the operating system to create widgets)

 The initial bug discussion (and deleting the .metadata folder idea) does
 not seem on the right track as this is a "working directory" for the
 plugin system....

 Has OSGeo live updates operating systems or version of Java used recently?
 I would like to check that it is running a supported environment....
