Few years back, i had some initial discussions with folks in the Raspberry Pi Foundation (before they became famous :)) to explore ideas on how we can use Raspberry Pi https://www.raspberrypi.org/ for teaching Spatial Programming in Schools. The inspiration befind this was the successful gvSIG Batovi program of using OLPC which helped enable spatial learning for primary and secondary school students across Uruguay. So the idea was that with internet reach increasing and with low cost hardware , it will help enable schools in poor countires to also teach computer science and programming to thier students. There is also need to develop teacher training programs to support this.

Just a quick note: due to the incredible job done by Debian GIS (and
especially Bas Couwenberg) you can actually get much of OSGeo live on
your raspberry pi (and most other hardware) without much hassle:
Eg by installing the gis metapackages as documented at [1].

You will see that the recently released "jessie" distributions
contains many up-to-date GIS applications, and for many (including
QGIS) even more recent versions by using backports [2].

I'm actually planning to create a package of the OSGeo live
documentation, so those can be included in the future as well.

Kind Regards,
Johan
