Micha, Sandor,
Our strong preference is to use datasets already installed on
OSGeo-Live. I've already mentioned that it reduces size, but the
other reason is that uses can test 2 different databases with the
same data and see how they do or do not differ.

For instance, the QGIS quickstart may say:
Connect to the Natural Earth dataset, which is available in either
PostGIS or Spatialite, then select the ...

So before we add another dataset, could you please answer whether we
can make use of the natural earth dataset already included, linked
from here: http://live.osgeo.org/en/overview/overview.html

Micha, again, could you please forward this email on.

Sandro, developer of Spatialite has offered an alternate,
better organized and smaller sample spatialite database. The
data are released under CC-0 by the Provence of Trento, so
freely re-distributable.

His version, hosted on gaia-gis.it ( see [4] below ) is
designed and indexed with the newest version of spatialite.
Since the Ubuntu binaries are a version behind, a small change
to his DB is required to avoid it throwing an error when loading
the data in Spatialite-GUI.

Here [5] is my altered version. I've included a short
readme.txt . If this tar.gz could be placed in a stable download
location on OSGeo, I'll make the necessary changes to the
install-spatialite.sh and to the quickstart guide.

Hi Sandor:
Thanks for putting this together. I'll check with OSGeo if there's
time to switch to this DB.
As you might know, Ubuntu (and thus the OSGeo Live DVD) are still
using the 1.4.0 version of the spatialite-gui. So when I load the
trento DB I get this error:
SQLite Error: No such Module: VirtualSpatialIndex
Loading with the CLI spatialite (version 3.0.0 beta on Ubuntu) no such
error appears.
Shall I remove SpatialIndex table to avoid this?
Thanks, Micha
