I've added to the install_spatialite.sh script <br>
apt-get install libjpeg62 # an older version still available that
spatialite needs<br>
and that solved the problem.<br>
I'll report this on the ubuntugis list.<br>

In addition I've made a few more changes to that script to get other
libraries from the ubuntugis repo. This includes: spatialite-bin
and rasterlite-bin, rather than the binaries from the gaia-gis site.<br>

Note that this CLI version (3.0.0) includes support for XLS tables,
and the more advanced handling of spatial indexes. But the older GUI
(version 1.3) includes neither of these... Not an ideal situation.<br>
<br>
So we now have (more or less the same as OSGeo Live 5.5): <br>
*Quite* old versions of the two GUI programs, installed from
binaries on the gaia-gis.it site. <br>
Somewhat newer versions (almost a year old) of the CLI programs with
the newer features.<br>
<br>
Let's hope that UbuntuGIS bumps the whole suite up together.<br>
