It would be very interesting if you could help us create packages
like:<br>
osgeolive-lxde_xyz.deb, osgeolive-kde_xyz.deb etc...<br>
<br>
Those could be included in our ppa and replace the current shell
menu installer.<br>
Then we could try an alternate iso creation or a process to
install KDE on top of current iso.<br>

Thoughts?<br>

<pre wrap="">Hi guys
I have been following the development of this project for a couple of years
now, and was especially happy to see a 64 bit version, as one of my most
used applications is Opticks, as that is only available as 64 bit.
I personally would welcome "forks" based on other Desktop environments, as
I particularly like KDE
I would like to volunteer attempting to test the feasibility of using KDE.
(Kubuntu)
On a side note, I have been using Gentoo for ages, but have recently
switched to Arch Linux, as it gives me greater freedom in what I choose to
include, and to compile the apps that I want. The last few months I have
spent using GIS software on Arch, and was really impressed of what can be
done!! Most, if not all apps included on the DVD, I can use in Arch.
I would like to try (in the new year) to have a GIS specific Arch Distro,
to see if I can emulate the Live DVD in Arch.
Regards
Pieter

Is it possible to add more desktop managers? Lubuntu has just LXDE. With
the current project, when I try to use another manager (GNOME or Cinnamon),
lots of programs stop working (and I really don't understand why).
This is not really a matter of functionality. It's just that I don't enjoy
working in a Windows-like distribution of Linux. I think GNOME is a
environment that aims productivity.
For OSGeo-Live, we only support one desktop manager, primarily as reduces
the amount of testing required in getting the release out. Lubuntu is the
desktop we use because it is small and we try to keep the size small enough
to fit on a DVD.
We'd be happy to see another distribution supported as a branch, but I
expect it will be quite a bit of effort. Volunteers are always welcome.
During the build procedure we customize the desktop environment in order
to add the geospatial menu, the desktop items etc. We do not do this
customization on the packaging level: we do not produce derivative deb
files of LXDE.
Instead we execute:
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="https://github.com/OSGeo/OSGeoLive/blob/master/bin/install_icons_and_menus.sh">https://github.com/OSGeo/OSGeoLive/blob/master/bin/install_icons_and_menus.sh</a>
which customizes the desktop post-install.
To achieve what is suggested here would require us to fork debian
packaging of other desktop environments (GNOME, KDE etc) and make sure that
all applications work fine on those environments.
>From my experience, every major GNU/Linux distribution has a dedicated
team of maintainers for each desktop environment supported.
Short answer: we could do that if we had enough hands to help.
There's also a recommendation of adding a program called SPRING (
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://www.dpi.inpe.br/spring/english/index.html">http://www.dpi.inpe.br/spring/english/index.html</a>). I underestimated this
software for remote sensing image processing. My mistake. I never saw a
software transform a scanned map (raster) into vector so fast and so
perfectly. And I will not mention the awesome speed of its supervised
classification. It's astounding. I never witnessed something alike. Not in
free or proprietary software.
Sadly! This software will not be supported anymore. I hope someone fork it
in some moment.
If this project is as good as you suggest, and there is a community behind
the project who wish to do the work to bring the project to OSGeo-Live,
then we would certainly consider it.
The process is described here:

And... That's it!
Thanks!
