<p>Hi Sean, Ethan, all </p>
<p> </p>
<p> The Docker model is somewhat orthoganal to the aims and implementation of
the OSGeo-Live.</p>
<p>We are not *against* Docker, its just different. For example, a Docker
model works well to spawn</p>
<p>hundreds of servers that may be short-lived, and have identical install
footprints. I understand</p>
<p>that due to the popularity and some commerical investment, the Docker model
is being spread</p>
<p>further to include demo installs of heavier apps, in an easily reproducible
way .. </p>
<p> </p>
<p> Meanwhile, the OSGeo-Live is intended to be a stand-alone boot, that will
work *without a </p>
<p>network connection* at all.. this is important in a few scenarios, like a
secure physical environment, </p>
<p>training and education, the third-world, and in-the-field use, to name a
few.. The Live is intended</p>
<p>to be a fully-functioning, stand-alone Live disk which works on mid-level and
legacy PC hardware.</p>
<p>This also makes it well suited to being a 32bit VM, but that is a
side-effect. Docker is intended</p>
<p>for on-demand, server-side installs and as a side-effect, amakes installation
easy on a laptop</p>
<p>for a demo .. etc </p>
<p> </p>
<p> I am not in the Docker community, so if I misundestand, or miss something
important here, </p>
<p>please speak up !</p>
<p> </p>
<p> Lastly, I think i can say we are super-interested in the THREDDS server
showing something on </p>
<p>the Live. We are first-off an end-user disk, so its not clear what level of
detail is appropriate.</p>
<p>But there are plenty of possibilities, and it is *definitely* in line with
the mission here.</p>
<p> </p>
<p> best regards from Berkeley, California</p>
<p> Brian M Hamlin</p>

<div>Greetings Cameron,
<div> </div>
<div>I do not mind at all if you share and move this over to the OSGeo-Live
list. We have team meetings every Thursday, so I will be sure to bring this up
tomorrow to get a feel for it. One question off the top of my head is do you
support using Docker to install software? I know it's not mentioned in the wiki,
but it makes installation of the THREDDS Data Server pretty painless, and is
what we have moved to for running our training workshop.</div>

<div>Greetings Cameron,
<div> </div>
<div>Thank you for considering the addition of the THREDDS project in
OSGeo-Live. First and most importantly, I want to assure you that the THREDDS
project has not stalled and is indeed still active. Our latest release for both
netCDF-Java and the THREDDS Data Server is version 4.6.3, and was released on 31
August 2015.</div>
<div> </div>
<div><a href="http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/blogs/news/entry/netcdf-java-library-and-tds" target="_blank">http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/blogs/news/entry/netcdf-java-library-and-tds</a>
</div>
<div> </div>
<div>We are approaching our next release, and hope to have it out by the end of
the year (v4.6.4). Note that most of our active development has been on v5.0,
which includes a major rewrite and extension to the way gridded datasets are
handled in general. This release will also included the latest version of ncWMS
(a.k.a. edal-java). We hope to have a beta available sometime in December.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>While the original lead developer, John Caron, is no longer with Unidata,
the THREDDS team is quite strong, and Unidata has doubled down on its commitment
to the THREDDS stack - no worries of this project becoming abandonware.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>If you would like to get an idea of current participation in the project,
including external contributors, please see our github project page (includes
both netCDF-Java and the THREDDS Data Server):</div>
