 As far as I know the choice between United States customary system (miles)
 and the metric system (meters) is now controlled by the variable "us" in
 ajaxmappane.templ at line 293.

 The value true chooses United States customary system, the value false
 chooses the metric system.

 I propose to read the value from a configuration parameter, maybe
 maintaining a true default value.
