Also make sure your data isn't too detailed for the scale ranges your using,
which can overload and kill the server

Also validate your data as bad geom can cause crashes. Newer FDO addresses
some of this

And just forget raster

If the server crashes is there a stack trace or do you get a segmentation
fault with no information?
