I am only able to comment on your first question: I have been at occasions pleasantly surprised by map sources in editor-layer-index (<a href="https://github.com/osmlab/editor-layer-index/tree/gh-pages/sources" rel="noreferrer noreferrer" target="_blank">https://github.com/osmlab/editor-layer-index/tree/gh-pages/sources</a>) and JOSM's imagery catalog (<a href="https://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/Maps" rel="noreferrer noreferrer" target="_blank">https://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/Maps</a>). I can recommend these.<br>
