Hi,
I have some problems which I believe are better posted here, they 
concern the rendering engine of UMN MapServer. I am new to this list, so 
please forgive if I don't know the workings yet.

I'll also be attending the UMN MapServer Conference in Ottawa and would 
like to get to know some of you & maybe we could even discuss some of 
our problems and ideas there.

We are leaving for Canada tomorrow, so I wont be able to answer to the 
list immediately, so please include my colleagues in the CC list, if 
possible.

Find the details of my questions in the attachement - its somewhat 
lengthy and I didn't want to choke your accounts with large effusions 
about our problems.

<P>In the following I want to discuss some cartographic limitations
which we will have to solve within the next few weeks, months &ndash;
well, OK &ndash; as soon as possible.</P>
<H2 CLASS="western">Intro</H2>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">There is a some of background
information which will help to understand WHY we have the problems
that we have. I have added them below so that you get the gist of
what we are trying to prove here and why it might be something that
brings the whole UMN MapServer community in Germany a lot further. 
</P>
<H1 CLASS="western">Starting Point</H1>
<P>The first problem we want to solve is that area filling symbols
have to be rotated by an angle. If we would know where look for in
the sources we could do that ourselves, so if this is an easy one
please write an email to me, Waldemar Wansidler

<H2 CLASS="western">Land Parcel Numbers (Positionierung
Flurst&uuml;cknummer )</H2>
<H3 CLASS="western">Decription</H3>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">Place a string coming from a PostGIS
dataset with a reference arrow. The string describes a lot number as
321/3, meaning &quot;region&quot; 321 has a subset of at lesast three
lots, numbered 1, 2 and 3. The representation in the map is either
directly as the string &quot; 321/3&quot;, or as</P>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm"><U>123</U></P>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">7</P>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">which is already possible by using the
&quot;/&quot; as WARP symbol. A nice to have would be to center the
lower number (7), meaning that WARPed texts would be centered on
every new line.

<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">It can be complicated further as soon
as the number has to be positioned outside of the lot because it is
too small to fit in (something quite normal to the highly fragmented
parcel landscape in Germany). Then additionally a reference arrow has
to be constructed, but it can be slightly complicated (because we
Germans like it complicated and love cartographically clean
presentation). 
</P>
<H3 CLASS="western">Solution</H3>
<P>I currently see two posible solutions:</P>
<UL>
	<LI><P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">Using SQL (we go for this one
	already, so don't bother too much, it just shows the way we think):
	Build an SQL which calculates the start and endpoint of the fraction
	bar by substracting and adding a factor to the x-coordinate of the
	central reference points. The numbers can be displayed centered
	above and below the fraction bar. The point nearest to the refernce
	point of the land parcel and thios point are the starting and
	endpoint of the reference arrow. The arrow head is a symbol which is
	inclined with the angle of the above constructed arrow line.<BR>Nice
	to have: The factor substracted and added to the reference point
	(the length of the fraction bar) is calculated from the string
	length of the larger number. 
	</P>
	<LI><P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">UMN MapServer learns to render
	this kind of arrowed lot number directly. 
	</P>
</UL>
<H3 CLASS="western">Priority</H3>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">Highest</P>
<H2 CLASS="western">Hatching of polygon areas (Geb&auml;udeschraffur)</H2>
<H3 CLASS="western">Decription</H3>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">Every building which is mainly used for
habitation has to be displayed with a 45&deg; hatching relative to
the front border of the building. Every other building has to be
displayed with a 90&deg; hatching  relative to the front border of
the building.</P>

The rotation angle of the front border of the house is known, because
the house number is also inclined by this angle.

<H2 CLASS="western">Symbols accompanying lines (Linienbegleitende
Signatur)</H2>
<H3 CLASS="western">Decription</H3>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">A multiline is to be displayed with
accompanying symbols. This is already possible with MapServer, but
the symbols have to alternating on each side. Problem: It is not
possible to set an initial gap but only the gap between each
iteration of a symbol (see also screenshot below)</P>
<H3 CLASS="western">Solution</H3>
<P>MapServer learns to set an initial gap which differs from the
iterating gap between symbols accompanying multilinies. 
</P>
<H3 CLASS="western">Priority</H3>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">Medium (because there might be a
workaround)</P>
<H3 CLASS="western">Workaround?</H3>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">Possibly a SimpleFeature operation in
PostGIS (is topology feature necessary?) could return an iteration of
nodes on the multiline including the rotation angle. Then the
positioning of the symbole could be done traditionally with the MAP
file by selecting the left half and the right half of the nodes.</P>
<H1 CLASS="western">Slope symbology (B&ouml;schungsschraffur)</H1>
<H3 CLASS="western">Decription</H3>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">A polygon (area) represents a slope.
>From the upper border lines have to fall with a right angle to the
lower slope border. Every second line has to be half the length of
the distance, evry other second line has to reach the lower border. A
screenshot will tell more than words.</P>

and should not really be necessary to be supported just because some
stoneheads want it... Additionally there is a workaround by creating
redundant definiton geometry, not nice but doable)</P>

<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">Create the slope lines directly as new,
extra &amp; redundant definition geometry. I have programmed code in
Visual Basic years ago that does exactly this farily imperfectly but
it should suffice. It would just have to be bent a little to
understand PostgreSQL/PostGIS.</P>

</P>
<H1 CLASS="western">More to come</H1>
<P>We might stumble over more problems when we dig deeper into the
matter. Please could you enlighten me on how to manage such problems,
as I have stated above, this is our first try with the developers
list.</P>

<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">The strategic background to the
problem. German geodesists have busily measured and recorded every
lot and every flowerpot in Germany for the past roundabout 400 years.
</P>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm"><BR>
</P>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">20 Years ago geodesists have created
the ALK (Automatisiertes Liegenschaftskataster ~ automated land
management cadastre) which describes how a digital system must handle
this data and how it will be presented on paper at a scale of 1:500
and 1:000. 
</P>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm"><BR>
</P>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">6 months ago we persuaded an ALK
provider (geodesists working in the local administration) to
implement the ALK with Open Source software. Proprietary software is
either slow, old, discontinued, not capable to be access through the
web and so on. There are really good reasons to do it with OS.</P>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm"><BR>
</P>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">Now we have  the above problems</P>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">:-)</P>

</P>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">The geometry of the data is defined in
the &quot;ALK specification&quot; which is something like a bible to
the geodesist. The logic of the data is hierarchical, starting with
the lot number which has a child containing the area of the lot which
has childs representing the lines which have childs representing the
endpoints of the lines. Each single point (node) can again be the
child of as many as 50 superior objects (a building, slope, road,
county border, whatever). Thus a completely redundance-free dataset
can be put together which until not long ago was so complicated to
handle and so frustratingly slow to present on a screen that nobody
but a few specialists with high end machines werer be able to work
with it.

<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">The cartographic legend to this
cadastre comprises round about 800 symbols and several hundred line
accompanying and area fill symbls and signatures. 
</P>
<H2 CLASS="western">Decision for UMN MapServer and PostgreSQL/PostGIS
technology 
</H2>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">After long consideration, testing and
discussion we have set out to kill the beast using UMN MapServer and
PostgreSQL/PostGIS to handle this data and to present it. 
</P>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">Part one of the taks, breaking down the
geometry structures and rebuilding it according to OGC Simple
Features with PostreSQL and PostGIS (WKT) is almost done. In good
tradition we have declared it Open Source, the code is available at
SourceForge:</P>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm"><A HREF="https://sourceforge.net/projects/edbs2wkt/">https://sourceforge.net/projects/edbs2wkt/</A></P>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">(It was programmed by Frank J&auml;ger
who is employed at a data processing service center hosting
administrative data for about 1.3 million citizens. It is a good
example for the target community we are aiming at with the
development of the ALK.)</P>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">The source format of the ALK is a
sequential ASCII text named EDBS, hence the project name EDBS2WKT.
There exist EDBS data for almost every corner of Germany and the data
is maintained with all those old, big rumbling machines bearing
software from ancient computer times. 
</P>
<H2 CLASS="western">UMN MapServer Rendering (drawing) Engine
Deficiency</H2>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">Attaining this goal is a great feat,
but now we have hit some no-go problems with the rendering engine of
UMN MapServer trying to implement the ZVAUT-compliant presentation
where it seems that we need the combined effort of the community. To
present the ALK correctly we have to be &quot;ZVAUT-compliant&quot;,
which we already are to about 90%. 
</P>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">The missing 10% I rather tend to
describe as a problem of the German ALK  ZVAUT compliancy lunacy but
nobody will listen to me...</P>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm"><BR>
</P>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">Up until now we managed to get UMN
MapServer to do everything we needed without troubling the
development gurus, but it seems like we hit a wall where we would
waste a lot of energy trying to find out what you already know. 
</P>
<H2 CLASS="western">Financing</H2>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">Additionally we have collected  some
money to spend on solving these problems and would very much like to
get into business with anybody who potentially can help us solve the
problem soon. &quot;Us&quot; in this context is the Germany based

<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">Much more important is the number of
new UMN MapServer users we will reach and make happy once we have
solved the problems - its thousands if not tens of thousands. UMN
MapServer and the Open Source idea is currently spreading through the
German administration and it would be boosted  considerably, if we
yould be able to present the ALK data with ZVAUT conformity.

<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">We are trying to tap this financial
base but as you all will also know this is a hard task, especially
with the current financial squeeze here. I am pretty sure that once
the problem of the ALK ZVAUT-compliancy is solved people will start
to spend more on development, but the problem is that currently
people still do not quite understand that we need the money to
develop something BEFORE it is finished and that afterwards it will
automatically be available as Open Source.

<H2 CLASS="western">The Strategic Problem</H2>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">The inherent problem is slightly
off-key, let me explain. Only very few have an interest in the ALK
data as it is beeing represented ZVAUT compliant on paper at a scale
of 1:500, but those few are responsible to decide which software is
to be used. 
</P>
<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">More than 90% of all users of the ALK
geometry and content are not interested in the paper presentation but
need the geometry for completely different contexts, from city
planning to environmental protection activities. But they are not
allowed to use the ALK data with software which is not capable of
presenting it in the appropriate ZVAUT-compliant manner.

<P STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm">We have been active politically and
hoped to amend some of the more incredulous requirements, but this
takes more time (it took 20 years to sediment...) than we are
inclined to wait.
