Map file: EXTENT

Just starting to work with MapServer. Successfully compiled the source in NT
thanks to all the existing helpful postings.

I've got a question about the Map file structure, specifically the EXTENT
line. The sample file shows numbers such as 481093.000000 4969319.036682
502271.000000 4997508.3073184; are these values in meters? And if so meters
from what?

Can someone give me a clue in this? Thanks in advance,
