show/hide labels

Hi,

Is there a way to turn off/on labels associated with objects through mapserv
CGI? I know that you can set the LABELMAXSCALE to control the labels, but
can you specifically instruct mapserv CGI to do that by passing parameters
to it? Or, maybe through mapscript?

These labels are LABELITEM in LAYER object defined in mapfile.

An alternate approach I have in mind is to put the labels on a separate
layer than the objects. But, if I can keep it the way it is (ie. same
layer), it would be a better solution.
