Sure, that would make sense, use that for all layer types. (call the parameter SWATCH) This type of control is why I'd like to ditch everything but GDAL (assuming EPPL support). Much easier to keep track of for one function...

Steve,

I like the idea of being able to provide a sample swatch via the map file
to place in the legend, but I wonder if the same option should be available
for pseudocolored images we don't want to put through a real classification?

In this, perhaps the raster code would look for the SAMPLE keyword and not
do any classification if it is found.
