Yes, convert all images to JPEG or PNG (PNG is better), and change the
map file accordingly.

I haven't downloaded the demo for a while, are you sure you downloaded
the latest demo version? I guess by now the map files shouldn't contain
pointers to GIF files, but this is, as I said, just a guess.
