The world file gives the georeference to the image.
It is a text file with 6 numbers
1st row: pixel size in x (east) direction
2nd row: 0
3rd row: 0
4th row: -pixel size in y (north) direction
5th row: x co-ordinate for upper left corner
6th row: y co-ordinate for upper left corner

2nd and 3rd row depend on the rotation, but few sotfware can
handle it.
Here is a sample world file. Use .wld or tfw extension to the file name.
the image and world file must be in the same directory and must have the 
same name (e.g. raster.tif raster.wld).
