[Mapserver-users] Why do so many interatate shields display?

I am trying to create a map with interatate shields (.gif) and interstate
labels (shape attribute) displayed.
I cannot seem to get just one or a couple of highway shields to display.  It
appears that every segment of the line
receives a gif.  I've tried dissolving, chaining, weeding data to no avail.
I am able to get the label to appear how I want using the MINDISTANCE
parameter, but too many shields are still displaying.
Any hints that can be provided are much appreciated!
