[Mapserver-users] map extent

Hi there,

If you don't have ArcView (or some other GIS package), download a GDAL
binary package or compile the source.  There's a utility program called
ogrinfo that will give you the shapefile extent.  For raster data,
gdalinfo can give the image extent.

If you do have ArcView 3.x, you can also get the adding your data to a
view, clicking on the "View" menu and selecting "Properties", and the
clicking on the "Area of Interest" button.  That's what I remember
anyway.  Other GIS packages that support shapefiles should also be able
to give you the extent--it's usually a matter of getting at your
shapefile's properties.
