I agree with Paul.  SLD could be a good match for your app.  In the 4.2 
release
the layerObj has generateSLD and applySLD methods.  Think of it as a 
stylesheet
for your layer.

BTW -- Paul, it would make it so much easier to make sense of these 
threads if
you would follow suit on bottom-posting vs top-posting.  I don't think 
one is
necessarily better than the other, but since you replied to a thread in 
which I had
already started bottom-posting, you should follow suit.  For the 
benefit of future
readers in the archive.  Just my $.02.
