I also have the same problem.
You could send the code to me to highlight entities after having made a
query to select entities

the easiest way would be using the querymap function like
...
// Execute a query (here an attribute query)
$queryString =3D3D "('[subdivname]' =3D3D '$sSubDivsion')";
$your_layer->queryByAttributes('subdivname', $queryString, MS_MULTIPLE);

// Draw map
$mapImg =3D3D $map->drawQuery();  // instead of $map->draw()
...

You can specify colors for highlighting in a QUERYMAP tag in the map =3D
file.
