postgis error - Error executing POSTGIS BEGIN statement

Hi List,

while doing a query by rectangle on a postgis layer i get back the
following error message when i draw the map with the
$Map->drawquery();
statement.

Warning: [MapServer Error]: msPOSTGISLayerWhichShapes(): Error executing
POSTGIS BEGIN statement.
in /home/nicol/public_html/mapserver/mapserver.inc on line 1467

I attached the server log i get back from the Postgresql-Server when i
turn on
log_statement = true

The last message is:

ERROR:  invalid string enlargement request size 1752002400
WARNING:  AbortTransaction and not in in-progress state
FATAL:  invalid frontend message type 58

My environment is
Debian Linux (sarge)
Mapserver 4.4.1
Postgresql/Postgis
select version();
                            version
---------------------------------------------------------------
 PostgreSQL 7.4.3 on i686-pc-linux-gnu, compiled by GCC 2.95.4
(1 row)

select postgis_version();
            postgis_version
---------------------------------------
 0.8 USE_GEOS=1 USE_PROJ=1 USE_STATS=1


Do anybody know what is going wrong here and how i could fix this?
