"proj=latlong" "ellps=WGS84" "datum=WGS84" should work just fine for
GPS. This is essentially equivalent (to eight decimal places) to
GRS80.

Be aware, however, that the nationalatlas.gov shapefiles have been
generalized (i.e. simplified), and are unlikely to match up exactly
with your GPS traces in any case.
