Tom, 

As Bart notes, new versions of GDAL should handle the spatial
queries much more efficiently for ODBC via VRT (assuming the 
database can handle the query efficiently).   

I am concerned about the crash though.  There was a cleanup
issue with an older version of the OGR VRT driver that might
be causing it.  If the problem persists with GDAL 1.3.0 let me know
and we can try to dig into it.
