displaying symbols with php mapscript

Can anyone point me to a good reference for creating a style and a  
symbol from phpmapscript.

I am trying to display a county or city with a hatch pattern based on  
an expression.

The documentation on the mapserver site gives no or little example uses.

I can selectively fill the background color of any county or city  
using an expression.  But my attempts at setting the style to use a  
hatch symbol are not working.
