G'day Donal,

you could try :


	$oLayer	-> set('classitem','SessionID');
	$oClass	 = ms_newClassObj($oLayer);
	$oClass -> setExpression($sessionvalue);
	
The expression might need to be quoted, I don't know if setExpression  
does this? get it to output ($map->save()) a mapfile and check.
