highlighting a feature in mode=map

Is it possible to highlight a feature when using mode=map?  I've tried
setting up the qlayer and qstring to select a feature by a gid, but I'm not
getting the desired results.

What are the recommended ways of highlighting a feature without returning
additional information about the feature (I have an ajax call that has
already returned that info).
