Hi Steve, 
Thanks for the information.. 
I have replaced  ...&mode=nquerymap&...with
...&mode=nquery&qformat=png24&..."(among other qformats)

mode= map and WMS GETMAP work..
mode=query and WMS GETFEATUREINFO do not..
.. all with blank response and no errors..it is like the cgi just stops.. 

*If I set the SDE layer to "STATUS DEFAULT or ON" I get no response at all
to...*
