You can do something like:

 

CLASS

    STYLE

      SYMBOL 'http://maps2.dnr.state.mn.us/compass/lib/markers/02.png'

      SIZE 41

    END

END

 

Where the symbol can reference a local file or a URL.

Dear Sirs/Madams,

 

  It's been a while since the last time I used map server. As a result I don't remember the exact syntax for loading some svg, png and gifs as symbols in a point layer. How could the following code be transformed in order to replace the star symbol with a gif titled as cemetery.gif?

 

CLASS

                                    NAME 'cemeteries'

                                    STYLE

                                                COLOR 254 0 0

                                                IMAGE 'star'

                                                SIZE 8

                                    END

                        END
