<div class="moz-cite-prefix">Hi Marc, all,<br>
A few disconnected thoughts from an old OSGeo hand:<br>
<br>
* Nic, with regards to the Marketing committee, I feel the best
way to attract members is for the marketing committee (Marc in
this case) to start doing things, which in turn will attract
opinions and interest. So lets not wait until a committee forms
before electing a chair. Lets just get started.<br>
<br>
* Marc, yes OSGeo convention is to vote on ideas. Usually the
voting isn't needed, but it is useful on contentious issues.<br>
<br>
* I don't care if Marc has credentials a mile long, or if he is a
high school student. If he comes up with great ideas for OSGeo
marketing, and is prepared to put in the effort to make it happen,
then that is exactly want we want from our volunteers.<br>
<br>
* OSGeo is a do-ocracy. I hold great respect for people who do
stuff. <br>
<br>
* OSGeo is performing at its best when we are supporting and
encouraging of all the new ideas that keep flowing into OSGeo. The
only catch is OSGeo has no access to push people to do things and
almost zero budget to work with.<br>
<br>
* OSGeo is best at "helping those that help themselves"<br>
<br>
* People who "do smart and useful things" attract like minded
people.<br>
<br>
* For those looking for Marc's thoughts, he put them here:
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Talk:Marketing_Committee">https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Talk:Marketing_Committee</a><br>
<br>
* Marc, I can't remember if I pointed you to this before. It is my
take of a SWOT analysis, with input from the board at the time:
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/OSGeo_Board_:_Board_Priorities_2013">https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/OSGeo_Board_:_Board_Priorities_2013</a><br>
<br>
Warm regards, Cameron<br>

committee is not a mailing list IMHO, ever! It is a group of
active participants with added value to each other. Not a
passive special interest group. Everyone who brings
something to the table is more than welcome.<br>
<br>
The discussion regarding my involvement tends to go in
circles (although I see it also as a positive and active
interest in the marketing function), it leads to increased
chaos which is IMHO leading us nowhere. Somebody is needed
to act as committee chair, a central hub and address for
funding requests and the like. And I 'happened' to be around
;-)<br>
<br>
In any other organisation, I should (!) normally know what
is the next step. Structure and processes without too much
ambiguity. At the moment I am ping-ponging between various
individuals for yes/no vote, yes/no structured marketing
approach and yes/no commitment&support from Board (as a
total) and Committee. No wonder the marketing function has
deteriorated over the past years.<br>
<br>
Luckily various individuals have expressed support via lists
and direct messages. So I will take my cue and motivation
from them. Jody's Mail for voting has taken way too long to
be answered and the answers/comments generated in turn more
questions. I refuse to explain myself to individuals any
further in terms of experience and knowledge per individual
email, please visit my LinkedIn profile or ask others in the
community. It is becoming ridiculous and demotivating. And
there is an end to my patience and politeness.<br>
<br>
Therefor, I am going to do it my way, guys. My time, my
priorities. And whoever joins in is very very very welcome!
Whoever has advice has both my ears and attention. Whoever
has constructive criticism is heard. Whoever spends time is
a champ and deserves the stage. Whoever reaps the fruits of
my and others' volunteer work is quite welcome to it.<br>
<br>
But whoever is throwing sand in the machine, I don't have
time for. I rather spend time on working towards a more
professional approach of the marketing function, show others
what it entails by doing it (like others have shown me what
coding entailed) and be 'part of the solution, not the
problem'.<br>
<br>
Vriendelijke groet,<br>
