Hi Adam, everyone,

Thanks for the note about the agenda - I have spotted it now. I'm
still working out the processes, so apologies if I missed checking
something before sending the email.

I will be the first to admit the academic sector is not perfect -
far from it. (If you know of a perfect working environment, let me
know!). The current series of UCU strikes in the UK academic
sector being a prime example of this. In fact, I have left
academia and am now working as a freelance consultant. (I will
happily share my experiences with anyone who is interested!)

As I am sure you have seen, we use the term ECR to define as
anyone in a precarious employment position: "masters students, PhD
students or post-docs (prior to getting a permanent lectureship
position, i.e. tenure)". Approx 15 years ago we used the term
"Young Researchers" instead, but this was quite rightly replaced
with ECRs, as the term "young" <span style="color: rgb(23, 37,
42); font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 16px;
font-style: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal;
font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing:
normal; orphans: 2; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px;
text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2;
word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px;
text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-decoration-style:
initial; text-decoration-color: initial; display: inline
!important; float: none;">discriminates against those who have
had a career break, or who have joined academia later in their
careers.

I'd happily replace ECR with "ECRs / precarious research workers"
or even "precarious research workers" if you wish.

Clearly we need to and want to restrict the support to those not
in permanent employment, as a significant proportion/all of those
people are privileged (depending how you define privileged) so if
you have some alternative wording, please do suggest this!

I'm not sure whether I will be able to make it to the board
meeting or not, but if I can I will.

Best wishes,
Nick.
this: I've just spent 2.5 years seeing and experiencing "ECR"
